About 50 million years ago, these fish swam in a fresh water lake located in Southwestern Wyoming. When the fish died, they sank to the bottom of the lake where they were quickly buried. The soft sediment encased the fish and as the rock hardened over time, the skeleton was preserved. These fossil fish was recently excavated from the famous 18-inch level of the Green River formation near Kemmerer Wyoming. These 18-inch level fish are covered by matrix and must be carefully prepped out, but the spectacular results are worth the wait. This layer has by far the best specimens known and is currently off limits to fossil hunters. These fish are darker than the fish from the Split fish level of the formation. The overall length of this particular Diplomystus measures an astounding 17" (43.2cm) and the Priscacara is 5.125" (13cm). The large and dramatic matrix plate is 39" x 19.5" (99.1cm x 49.5cm). As you can see from the images, the matrix plate is beautifully shaped.... superbly sculptured by nature and ready for display. It has been prepped and fortified with a strong 11/16" thick laminate veneer backing for additional strength and durability.
