Gillmore" as Brigadier Commander of the Post, 1p, 8x10. Tyler, Pennsylvania, no date, but circa March 1862. Headed: "No. 40./Special Requisition." Request for "the Post at Tyler, Pa." Items requested include "285 Caps, 59 Uniform Coats, 241 pair Trowsers (sic), 168 Havre Sacks, 250 pr Bootees, 113 pr Drawers, 141 Canteens, 91 pr Stockings, 13440 lbs Oats, 1600 lbs Hay". The items were needed "to complete the full Equipments of the 7th Con. Vol". Also signed by the Post Quartermaster. On verso, docket signed: "R. Saxton" as Chief Quartermaster. In full: "Respectfully referred to Capt Haseale - who will please furnish the articles called for." Dated by Saxton: "March 21st". Saxton was Quartermaster during the Port Royal Expedition (October 21-November 7, 1861), in which Gillmore served with the 7th Connecticut Volunteers. Saxton was promoted to Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers as of April 15, 1862, less than a month after he signed this document. Union Major-General QUINCY ADAMS GILLMORE (1825-1888), who graduated from West Point at the top of his class in 1849, was Assistant Instructor of Engineering at the Military Academy from 1852-1856. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, his 7th Connecticut Regiment Infantry was assigned to Wright's 3rd Brigade in Sherman's Expeditionary Corps. until April 1862. Following the successful campaign in Port Royal, South Carolina, Gillmore was in charge of building fortifications at Hilton Head. Later in 1862, he assisted in the capture of Fort Pulaski.
